Bean is one of many supporting characters from Ender's Game, the protagonist from Ender's Shadow, and one of the leads from Shadow of the Hegemon and Shadow Puppets. Having no known family of any kind, he spent his early childhood on the streets of Rotterdam, surviving only with luck - and his mind. His superhuman intelligence caught the eye of a recruiter from the IF's Battle School - a military school for child geniuses being trained for the oncoming alien invasion - and then his story REALLY began.

Anyway, Bean's just a very interesting character. His intelligence is unbelievable, but his personality and conflict is very real, and very easy to identify with. Throughout ES, he's calculating, self-centered, and geared for survival; a child armed with the greatest weapon of all, a fully grown mind. However, it isn't enough, and he isn't happy. After he meets Ender, he finds out all he really wants is to be hero. He's faulted, despite his intelligence, because he think he cares nothing for people, because he deludes himself, and because one event of his childhood made him desperately afraid, and he can't get over it.. In fact, he's so realistic it's almost endearing. Like everyone else in Battle School, he's just a KID, and yet he's got the weight of the world on his shoulders.. plus his own private demons to deal with. (Actually, he never really does get away from his past.. Even after ES..)

Anyway, the point is, Bean's just cool. (And if you haven't read any of the Ender series, you're missing out. :P) So if you happen to like Bean as much as I do, join and show your love. ;p
